John Raaen was born on October 10, 1925 in Duluth, Minnesota. His father, also named John, was a Norwegian immigrant who worked as a machinist. His mother, Emma, was a homemaker. Raaen grew up in a blue-collar neighborhood and attended public schools. He graduated from Central High School in 1943.
After high school, Raaen enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II. He saw action in the Pacific Theater and was wounded while serving aboard the USS Hornet. After the war, he returned to Minnesota and enrolled at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1950.
Raaen began his teaching career after graduation. He taught physical education and coached football at Proctor High School in Proctor, Minnesota from 1950 to 1952. In 1952, he joined the United States Air Force and served for two years as an instructor at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. After his military service, he returned to coaching football and teaching physical education. He held positions at Hibbing High School (1954-1959), Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis (1959-1964), Washburn High School in Minneapolis (1964-1965), Anoka Senior High School (1965-1969),
and St Cloud Apollo High School (1969-1972).
